2013 Obsidian Ridge Estate Syrah
Our 2013 Estate Syrah is a complex and concentrated, full-bodied beast of a wine. On one hand, the wine is full of dark fruit aromas and sweet spice. On the other hand, it’s packed with savory notes of bacon fat and toasted walnuts. A sweet entry fills the palate with loads of blackberries that are laced with cinnamon powder. Lighter red cherry notes emerge late and create a complex finish. The marriage of Obsidian Ridge terroir and our signature Kádár barrels with the Syrah grape continues to be a magical experience in the bottle.
Obsidian Ridge Vineyard is planted at 2,640´ atop the Mayacamas range north of the Napa Valley. This is one of the newest American Viticultural Areas, named Red Hills Lake County for the distinctive volcanic soils that define this remarkable mountain appellation. The vineyard’s red soils are shot through with obsidian rock — this steep, sloping terroir of obsidian gravel is all that a winemaker could hope for. The unrestricted drainage and meager soil fertility produce wines with great tannic structure.
Drought 2013 was a beautiful vintage; idyllic would not be an overstatement. We enjoyed moderate conditions throughout the growing season, with few heat spikes and no rain. The warm and dry conditions of summer were perfect for supporting an evenly ripening crop on Obsidian Ridge. With cooler harvest weather, fruit came in ripe and ready at a leisurely pace from mid-September through mid-October. It was one of the easiest farming years in memory, with both high quality and reasonably high quantity.
Our Syrah is a blend of two clones planted on the mountainside, with each clone lending distinct character to the final blend. Handpicked at the crack of dawn, the grapes were carefully destemmed to tank where a warm fermentation followed to extract the brooding flavors that come with a young Syrah. The new wine was pressed at dryness and placed in our signature Kádár Hungary barrels, where it aged for 19 months. Frequent rackings in the wine’s youth released the expressive fruit character of the wine.
